This review covers how TourIstanbul by Turkish Airlines works, what the experience is like, and whether it is worth planning your flight around.
Layovers are usually the least exciting part of flying. Hours spent waiting, scrolling, or slowly losing respect for airport coffee prices. Turkish Airlines takes a different approach with its Touristanbul program. They turn eligible layovers into a free guided tour of Istanbul.
Instead of staying inside the airport, passengers with sufficient connection time can step out and explore a city that sits between continents, history, and cultures. It is one of those rare airline perks that actually feels like a travel experience rather than a marketing checkbox.
What is TourIstanbul?
This review is about TourIstanbul, which is operated by Turkish Airlines. Istanbul Airport (IST) is huge and this airline fly to more than 130 countries and more than 350 destinations. A lot of people have connecting flights in the city of Istanbul.
With this free tour you can get glimpses of the largest city of Türkiye, about its beauty and history. Therefore, I think, the purpose of their service is that they try to make you later come back to their city and stay there a couple more days.
Turkish Airlines gives you two opportunities. You can enjoy free accommodation in one of their partner hotels for one night if you travel economy and two nights if you fly business class or you can explore the city of Istanbul with TourIstanbul, if you are eligible.
TourIstanbul eligibility requirements
If you have a minimum of 6 hours and maximum of 24 hours between your international connecting flights, you may be eligible to take part in the TourIstanbul program.
Of course, you can take advantage of this service only if your flight times are compatible with the tour times. There are different tour departure times during a day, so you can choose the most suitable for you.
Another thing you shall check is your ticket number. Your Turkish Airlines ticket shall start with the number 235, then you are eligible to take part in the program. Besides, your arrival and departure flights shall be under the same reservation code (PNR).
One more thing you shall keep an eye on. There must be at least 1 hour and 25 minutes between the end time of your selected tour and your next flight. The reason is because you have to go through passport control and security check again to get to the airside of the airport.
How to book the TourIstanbul program?
In principle, you can book online here by entering your reservation code (PNR) or ticket number and your last name. I tried to book it online, but I didn’t manage to. In the end, I booked it in person when I arrived to the IST Airport.
To book the TourIstanbul program in person, you shall go and check in at the TourIstanbul registration desk on the Arrivals level. That means, you have to come out from the transfer area. You also have to go through passport control, so, calculate at least 30-40 minutes to get out. Plus, you have to be there at the check-in desk at least 30 minutes before the departure time of your chosen tour to register. Give yourself enough time to be there.
There is also a TourIstanbul Desk in the transfer area, but you cannot register to a tour there. You can get detailed information about the city tours and find out if you are eligible to participate in the tour. If you are not sure, go there first, and if you are eligible, you can go out to register.
Also, don’t forget about visa. Before booking, check the visa regulations, if you need it or not. On this map, you can check where you can find the desks at the airport.
Tour experience overview
The tour is a guided tour. A vehicle will pick you up at the Istanbul Airport and drive you back to the airport at the end of the tour. You will get a tour guide, who will tell you about the history and culture of the country. They offer four different tours at the moment:
- Sightseeing tour, between 08:00-11:30: this is a panoramic tour, and you won’t get off the vehicle.
- Half day tour, between 08:30-15:00: contains a breakfast
- Evening tour, between 16:00-21:30: contains a dinner
- Bosphorus tour, between 18:30-23:00: operating only between 01 April and 31 October, contains a dinner.
I have flown with Turkish Airlines three times now and never had enough connection time to go on a tour, except this last time. This time I planned my journey so that I can surely participate. I bought my ticket that had an almost 13 hours layover and I arrived at IST airport a little after noon, so, I went on the Evening tour.
After I deboarded the plane, I went to register to the tour. The TourIstanbul Desk is near the international passport control area. They give you a map where to find the Registration desk at the airport and you will also get a leaflet with all the necessary information.
From there to get to the Registration desk, you have to pass the passport control, the baggage conveyor belts and go out to the Arrival floor. When you are out you have to turn to the right, there you will find the desk. They will ask for your documents to register you, then you will get a small kit with a map of Istanbul and a badge you shall wear.
I stayed there, sat down and relaxed a bit, then I drank a coffee to get a little energy. People started to gather around in front of the desk, so, you won’t miss the place where the tour starts from. In the end, two buses took us to the tour, we were that many people.
After the tour the bus transported us back to the airport. We had to go through security check and passport control again. That is why you should have enough time before your next flight departures. The travel time between the city center and the airport is around 40 minutes.
Key highlights of Istanbul on the tour
Major landmarks are typically included in all the tours. For example, the Blue Mosque and Ayasofia Mosque (the latter only from the outside) or the Obelisks (Egyptian, Walled or the Serpentine Column). You also can cruise at night on the Bosphorus in summer.
Typically, you will get a meal (breakfast or dinner) during all the tours, except on the first, sightseeing tour, because it is conducted without getting off the vehicle.
For dinner on the evening tour we got bean salad as a starter, then the main course was “köfte”, the typical Turkish meatballs with rice and hot sauce if you like it piquant. They also offered drinking water and cola, as well. The restaurant opened in 1920, and they want to preserve the Turkish cuisine. The dinner was delicious and for me it was enough.
The whole tour I attended, from start to finish, took around five and a half hours. We went inside only the Blue Mosque and of course, the restaurant. You can see all the other sights from the outside. I liked the tour, the guide told us a lot of interesting facts.
I think, Istanbul is interesting and characterized by duality. On one hand it is a modern metropolis, but on the other hand it is an ancient city with a lot of history. We stayed only on the European side of the city. If you want to know more about the program of the tours, check them on the Turkish Airlines website.
Tips for making the most of the tour
If you are eligible to attend one of the tours that means you have both legs of your flight on the same ticket. If yes, then your checked baggages probably will be carried forward by Turkish Airlines to your next flight. That means, you do not have to worry about your checked-in bags.
If you have any other bags you don’t want to take with you to the tour, you can drop your luggages at the office operated by Istanbul Airport next to the Touristanbul Registration Desk for a small fee. Or you can just leave it on the bus. Make sure you don’t leave any valuables on the bus, if you choose the latter option.
If you want to enter the Blue Mosque (or any other mosque) you have to cover your hair. If you wear a hoodie, or scarf, or stole, you can cover your hair with it. You can ask for a scarf at the Mosque, if you do not have anything to cover it.
It is useful if you have a raincoat with you. Some seasons are much more rainy in Istanbul. Moreover, wear comfortable clothing and shoes, because you have to walk a bit from one attraction to the other. And of course, bring your camera or phone to take pictures.
Make sure you have enough time to register, to go on the tour, to get back and not miss your flight. The best layover length is if you add around two or three hours of your selected tour, at least one hour before and at least one hour after the tour. In that case, you will have enough time to stay calm and not to rush and be worried whether you make it on time.
Pros and cons of TourIstanbul
TourIstanbul works best for travellers who want to make the most of a long layover without dealing with the stress of organizing everything independently. It is structured, efficient, and surprisingly generous for a free airline service. Just be realistic about your energy levels. Sometimes the adventure is worth it, and sometimes your spine simply wants an airport chair and silence.
Review the pros of TourIstanbul by Turkish Airlines
- 1. It is completely free: this is the part that still feels slightly suspicious in the best possible way. Transportation, guide service, meals on some tours, and sightseeing are included if you qualify through Turkish Airlines. In an airport era where bottled water can cost the GDP of a small village, a free city tour feels almost rebellious. Beware, if somebody wants to sell it to you for money!
- 2. You get to see Istanbul without planning a separate trip: even a short visit gives you a glimpse of Istanbul’s atmosphere, architecture, and culture. If you have never visited Türkiye before, TourIstanbul turns a boring layover into an actual travel experience.
- 3. Organized and easy for transit passengers: the process is designed for travellers who are tired, jet-lagged, and probably operating on airport coffee. Transportation is arranged, timing is coordinated with flight schedules, and you don’t have to navigate the city alone.
- 4. Great use of long layovers: instead of spending 8-12 hours wandering around Istanbul Airport pretending duty-free perfume shops count as entertainment, you actually leave the airport and experience something memorable.
- 5. Comfortable introduction to Istanbul: for first-time visitors, it removes a lot of the stress: no transport planning, no language worries, no figuring out routes while sleep deprived.
Review the cons of TourIstanbul by Turkish Airlines
- 1. You are on a schedule: this is not independent travel. You follow the group, the guide, and the timetable. If you are someone who likes wandering side streets for three hours chasing coffee and photography spots, the structure can feel restrictive.
- 2. Limited time at each stop: you will see several places, but briefly. It is more of an introduction to Istanbul than a deep experience. Some travellers may leave wishing they had more time at certain landmarks.
- 3. Layover eligibility rules can be annoying: not every layover qualifies, and the timing requirements can feel oddly specific. Sometimes your connection is either too short or awkwardly too long for the available tours.
- 4. Traffic can affect the experience: Istanbul traffic can be huge. Depending on the time of day, you may spend a noticeable amount of time on the road instead of exploring.
- 5. Exhaustion is real: if you have already done a long-haul overnight flight, adding a city tour before another flight can either feel exciting or feel like your body filing a formal complaint against you.
Conclusion
TourIstanbul turns something most travellers try to survive into something they actually remember. Instead of sitting inside an airport, you briefly step into Istanbul and get a condensed but real glimpse of the city.
It is not a deep dive into Turkish culture, and it is not meant to be. It is a curated snapshot and as airline perks go, it is unusually generous. For anyone flying through Istanbul with enough layover time, skipping it would be the more confusing decision.
If you fly with Turkish Airlines and thinking about attending a TourIstanbul tour, I hope I could help you little bit to decide if it is with it for you with this review. And if you want to know more travel tips from me, check out the rest of my posts, as well.
