Travelling overland through Mesoamerica is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the region. Moving between El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico by land lets you see changing landscapes, cultures, and daily life that you would completely miss if you flew. However, border crossing in Mesoamerica by land can be confusing if you don’t know what to expect. From exit taxes and migration forms to transport logistics and unofficial “helpers,” being prepared makes the process far smoother. This guide shares practical tips based on real travel experience to help you crossing borders confidently and avoid common mistakes.

Border crossing between El Salvador and Guatemala

We travelled with Pullmantur, they have several buses a day from San Salvador to Guatemala City. We got on the first bus at 6 o’clock in the morning, which runs every day. You can see the itinerary, if you click here

The buses are departing from and arrive at the Hotel Sheraton Presidente in Colonia San Benito in San Salvador. You can get on and off the bus also in Santa Ana at Gasolinera Puma Santa Maria. When you get to Hotel Sheraton have your passport ready. They will check if it is valid, you have everything in order to enter Guatemala. There, your ticket will be given to you, with which you can board the bus. Alongside, ticket for all your luggages if they are bigger and you don’t want to take them up the bus with you. They will also hand out a migration form, when you check in.

You have to fill out the form until you get to the border, so, it is useful if you have a pen at hand. The form will ask about your personal details, where you will stay in Guatemala etc. Pullmantur will collect it from everybody before getting to the border and hand all the forms at the border to the officers themselves.

There is a checkpoint before the border in El Salvador, where an officer is getting on the bus and checking everyone’s passport. They pre-check, so everything runs smoothly. At the border you have to get off the bus and go through on foot. You will enter the office only at the guatemalan side, the name of the border is Valle Nuevo. There you will get your stamp.

The officer will ask you where you are going. They work both ways, either you can come from Guatemala or go to Guatemala. If you are going to Guatemala, you just have to answer you are going to Guatemala. The other question they ask is the purpose of your visit like e.g. tourism, business etc. Usually, these are the two questions they ask before you will be granted access to enter the country.

The price of the bus ticket contains a meal and drinks on the bus. Here you can check the prices of the different classes. The bus is comfortable, even the tourista class.

Your journey will take about five hours, it depends how much time you spend at the border or if there are any traffic jams. You will arrive in Guatemala at Hotel Holiday Inn, in Zone 10. Or depart from here, if you go the other way around, from Guatemala City to San Salvador.

About CA-4

The countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua are part of the formation CA-4. It is a similar agreement to the Schengen Agreement in Europe. This means free movement across borders for citizens of these countries without any restrictions or special checks. Also, the border crossing of foreigners of one of these Mesoamerican countries can also travel to the other by land (but not by air) without having to obtain additional permits or to undergo checks at border checkpoints.

Please note, that however maybe you get 180 days in El Salvador, you will get only 90 days in Guatemala. Actually, you will get less than 90 days in Guatemala. They deduct the days you already spent in El Salvador.

From Mexico to San Salvador by plane

I flew from Mexico City to San Salvador. I already had my plane ticket back home, from Cancun, Mexico. When I tried to check-in in Mexico City, the agent would not let me on the plane until I provide some ticket that I will for sure leave El Salvador in the next 180 days. That’s the law they have to follow.

The fact that I had a plane ticket from Mexico to home was’t enough. It wasn’t a ticket exactly out from El Salvador, so it didn’t matter. Therefore, keep in mind, that maybe you can’t get on the plane if you don’t already have e.g. a bus ticket that you will for sure leave El Salvador. So, I couldn’t check-in until I had proof that I will leave.

Fortunately, we already discussed our options, just hadn’t chosen which one we would take. At that time, we then had to choose which way we will go from El Salvador to Guatemala. I bought my bus ticket from San Salvador to Guatemala City online at the check-in counter at Mexico City airport and presented it to the agent. After that I could board the plane and leave Mexico.

Border crossing from Guatemala to Belize

I travelled from Flores, Petén with Marlin Espadas to Bacalar, therefore I had to travel through Belize. Marlin Espadas handed out the migration form in the morning before I got on the shuttle bus. You will have to fill it out if you want to enter Belize. The form asks similar questions like e.g. your personal details and where you will stay in Belize.

At the border on the Guatemalan side you have to get off the bus with all your luggages. You will enter the office at the guatemalan side, they check your passport and you will get your stamp that you exit from the country. After that you have to walk to the Belizean side on foot.

On the belizean side you have to give your passport and the form you filled out to the officer. Maybe they will ask you a question or two about your travel. You will get back the departure part of the form from the officer. After that you have to go through customs, where they can check your luggage. Or just ask you if you have anything to declare or what you have in your baggage. After that you are ready to go.

You have to search for your bus, it will wait for you on the belizean side. Maybe you have to change buses, depending on where you will go. If you are travelling to Mexico, you will have another stop at Belize City, where there is a chance you have to change buses again. The border crossings can take time.

Borders: Melchor de Mencos – Benque Viejo del Carmen

You can buy your ticket from Marlin Espadas online, or in the offices mentioned here.

Border crossing from Belize to Mexico

You again have to get off the bus. Also, you have to pay when exiting Belize. If you just travelled through the country, you have to pay 33,50 BZD (16,75 USD). When you stay a couple of nights, then 40 BZD (20 USD). You can pay with card, not just cash. After you payed, you will get your exit stamp at another booth. Here, you have to hand out the departure part of the form you previously filled out.

After all of you exited Belize you have to get on the bus, which will drive you to the Mexican side of the border. Here you have to get off again with all your luggages. The border crossing will take time. Mexican time.

You will be asked how many days you are planning to spend in Mexico, because you will be given only that much time or 1-2 days more. What is the purpose of your travel, do you have your ticket out of Mexico, these are the usual questions they ask. You will be given a migration form, you have to fill out a bit later. If you stay more than 7 days in Mexico, you have to pay a fee.

Your luggages will be checked whether you bring any goods that are prohibited. After that, you will enter the office, where you have to fill out the form and pay, if you got more than 7 days. Then, you will get your stamp and part of the form. After that you will enter another room, where you and your luggages will have to get through a scanner.

When everybody from the bus is ready, one of the officers will check the bus, as well. After all the checkings and if everything is all right you can continue your journey. Keep in mind you will “lose” an hour, because the Yucatan peninsula is in another timezone.

You will get on the same bus you get off from, from the border they will take you to your destination. If you get off in Chetumal and you want to travel further in Mexico with ADO bus, you will have to go to a different bus station, where the ADO buses are. We changed bus also in Chetumal, they transported me to Bacalar with another shuttle bus.

If you leave Mexico by air

Also keep in mind if you entered Mexico by land and leave by air, the first thing you should do is to go to the immigration office at the airport. You have to give them the part of the form you got back from the officer when you entered the country. So don’t lose it! They stamp the form, and after that, you can go to the check-in counters to check-in for your flight. You should give the stamped form to the check-in agent.

Conclusion

Border crossing in Mesoamerica by land might feel intimidating at first, but in reality, it’s usually manageable with a bit of preparation and patience. Each crossing has its own rhythm, but the basics remain the same: keep documents ready, carry small cash, and stay calm if things move slowly. Overland travel between these countries is not just a way to save money, it is a chance to experience the region more deeply. With the right mindset, border crossings become just another part of the adventure.
