Hidden deep in the jungles of northern Guatemala are some of the most impressive Maya ruins in the world: Tikal and El Mirador. These are the two of the most famous sites, but the experience of visiting them could not be more different.

Tikal is one of the most iconic archaeological sites in Central America, with towering temples rising above the rainforest canopy. It’s relatively easy to visit and can even be explored on a day trip from Flores.

El Mirador, on the other hand, sits far deeper in the Maya Biosphere Reserve. Reaching it requires a demanding multi-day jungle trek, but those who make the journey are rewarded with enormous pyramids and one of the most remote Maya sites in the region.

Final verdict

In Guatemala, both Tikal and El Mirador offer incredible glimpses into the ancient Maya world, but they appeal to very different types of travellers.

If you want convenience and iconic temples, visit Tikal. Tikal is the perfect choice if you want to see spectacular temples without committing to a demanding expedition. It’s accessible, historically rich, and one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Central America.

El Mirador, however, is an entirely different kind of experience. If you want a true adventure and one of the most remote Maya cities on Earth, choose El Mirador. The multi-day jungle trek, the remote location, and the sheer scale of the ruins make it feel like a true adventure. It requires more time, effort, and money, but for many travelers the journey itself becomes the highlight.

Most travellers who have the time try to see both. If you have the time and energy, visiting Tikal and also El Mirador offers the most complete experience of Guatemala’s ancient Maya heritage. But if you must choose between them, the right decision depends on whether you want a classic archaeological visit or a challenging jungle expedition.
